Autumn Glow Sea Buckthorn
Autumn Glow Sea Buckthorn
Autumn Glow Sea Buckthorn is a delightful addition for prairie growers looking for big flavour in a manageable space! Developed by Bill Schroeder and released in 2012 through COPF, this variety is a selection from seeds gathered in the rugged Altai Mountains of Siberia—so it’s more than ready to handle our Canadian cold.
As for the berries? They’re little bursts of golden-orange goodness, ripening in early to mid-August, with each plant delivering 8-10 kg of fruit. Its flavour is both complex and balanced, with zesty, tart notes and subtle hints of pineapple and mango. Averaging 65 grams per 100 berries, Autumn Glow’s fruit is perfect for adding a bit of tang to preserves or enjoying fresh right off the bush. Autumn Glow is also easy to harvest, thanks to it's soft thorns and it’s a cheerful, productive variety that’s as fun to grow as it is to snack on!
The Sea Buckthorn berry is high in vitamins C, E, K, carotenes, flavonoids, amino acids and is high in antioxidants. Equally impressive are its uses: jams, jellies, sauces, wine, tea and why not get creative and make a wonderful sorbet, also excellent to add to your homemade skin-care products!
The Sea Buckthorn shrub is very hardy and will adapt to a variety of soil conditions. Drought tolerant once established after a few seasons, it is nitrogen fixing and tends to sucker if not controlled.
Growers Note: Autumn Glow is the female cultivar and will need the male plant Lord planted nearby for pollination. We recommend a maximum of 7 female plants to each male. Although drought tolerant once established, it is recommended that Sea Buckthorn have regular watering or irrigation for the first few seasons.
