The Hazelbert was developed by Fred Ashworth of New York in the 1920s and is a hybrid of the Corylus Americana (American Hazelnut) and Corylus Avellana (European Hazelnut - also known as a Filbert) with carefully chosen genetics to promote disease resistance and productivity.

Hazelbert seedlings are variable in form and yield, yet vigorous plants produce sweet, oil-rich nuts in 3 to 4 years. Nuts average 1.5 - 2 cm (1/2"-3/4") in size and ripen in early September. Similar to our Northern Select hybrid, however, the origin and pollen used differ.

Maximize your land with this dependable, nutritious nut tree for your orchard, yard site, or food forest.

Growers Note: Hazelnuts should be harvested before the squirrels get them, try checking by mid-August and harvest hazels when the husks start to brown. Alternatively installing a metal fence around the bush might keep your nut stash safe as well.
