Meet the Skiba Plum – A Prairie Success Story
Skiba is a delightful plum variety that originated as a seedling in Boyle, Alberta, thanks to the determination of local grower Evelyn Skiba. Its yellow-skinned plums blushed with red, have juicy yellow flesh and are semi-freestone. Averaging 4-5 cm in size, these plums ripen in late August, offering a sweet summer treat.
What sets the Skiba Plum apart is it's story. Evelyn planted nearly 100 store-bought plum seeds, but only a handful survived the harsh Alberta winters. After seven years of nurturing, one tree produced delicious, reliable fruit. While it blooms early, making it sensitive to frost, the Skiba plum still delivers a tasty harvest each season. Its large, white blossoms have a longer flowering period than most plums.
Skiba plums are ready to enjoy when they easily fall from the tree or can finish ripening on the counter. Precocious and dependable, Skiba is a true testament to resilience and is an excellent choice for prairie growers!
